Choosing an oud oil

Oud oil is the concentrated perfume oil of agarwood, the dark, resin-rich heartwood of Aquilaria trees. It is worn on the skin a drop at a time and changes as it warms: the first minutes can feel sharp, then wood, resin and sweetness come forward.

Each oud oil here is grouped by how it smells, so you can start from a scent you already like.

Sweet: Cambodian Caramel, Borneo 3000 and Samtura lean warm and rounded, with notes of caramel, honey and fruit.

Fresh: Basic Kinam and Oud Night Power open cool and green before settling into soft wood.

Deep: Assam Organic and Yunnan 2003 are darker and slower: dry wood, incense and a musky depth.

Smoky: Tigerwood Melayyu is dense and earthy, with smoke and dark resin.

Floral: Serenduu and Samtura carry soft florals over warm wood.

Where to start

New to oud? Begin with a sweet or fresh oil such as Cambodian Caramel ($299) or Basic Kinam ($395). For something deeper and more contemplative, try Assam Organic ($350) or Yunnan 2003 ($1,500).

How to wear it

Apply one small drop to the wrist or neck and let it warm without rubbing. Oud oils are concentrated, so start with less than you think.
